(More customer reviews)I enjoy installing stuff and doing it myself.Over the years I have installed several ceiling fixtures and most of them have been quite simple to install. This time I ventured into the world of Solid Oak Wood with a bit of heft to the fixture. The Oak matches our cabinets well and looks great in place. There is little reward to hanging a light fixture other than having it work well after the switch is flipped to on.The flipping of the switch caused significant light to fill the room and it made not one sound. So, now we have a room filled with light and a fixture that really looks great with the other oak items in the kitchen. If you are reading this and stop here, you might want to consider reading further.
The ordering process was handled quite well from Amazon. That's normal and wonderful. Then the fun began.I received no confirmation or tracking number for the light. After contacting the supplier I received a confirmation from Amazon and Gilroy's.Then after several days I received the tracking number.I ordered it on 1-2-10 and received it on 1-7-10.Not bad at all even though we had no light in the kitchen.Cooking was a tad awful.During the meantime I checked for tubes at Lowe's and bought them even though I was not fully sure exactly what to get.It is somewhat difficult changing from T-12 tubes to T-8.But no big thing.Armed with tubds and a fixture I read the instructions.Shucks, I always read instructions. No mention of the possibility of needing another hearty soul.Caveat:DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL THIS FIXTURE ALONE.It will take at least two lucid persons to do the job.I noticed that the fixture had been opened before arriving here.I do not like that in the least. When buying a new fixture I want a BRAND NEW, UNOPENED fixture. When pulling the fixtue out of the box the insulation foam began to crumble.Luckily, I did it outside in the garage. The foam stuck to the fixture including the diffuser. No matter how much I attempted to rid the fixture of foam beads, the static electricity held them to the fixtue. Finally, I used a vac to clean the mess. That was a 20 minute waste.Inside we went so the pieces could come to room temperature including the foam. Then came the fight with the foam. This sounds bizarre but it took about an additional 15 or 20 minutes to get the foam and the backing separated.i would suggest that the foam was old or had been exposed to excessive heat and then dried out.Regardless, it just would not separate until I found my loope and razor blade to effect separation.Forget the instructions when it comes to installing the fixture to the ceiling.I finally used toggle bolts and strongly suggest anyone else to do the same.Measure twice and drill the holes.
I am so sore today that I can hardly get around because of the up and down on the ladder attempting to follow the poorly written instructions.Thank goodness there were two of us or I'd still be without light. The old adage of "Nothing is impossible to the person who does not have to do it." holds true.
