(More customer reviews)I purchased two of these.Nice compact, lightweight construction that is easy to install.The reflector is about the right shape to crudely approximate a CPC reflector, and it has a good specular surface - maybe 85% as good as the popular German-made reflectors.The special mounting hardware provides lots of flexibility for mounting configurations.It helped me add a strip of 55 3-watt LEDs to augment the 630 nm wavelength that is missing from all fluorescent tubes.
Inside though, the ballast is not what one would expect in a product with "High Performance" as part of its name.After a 3 minute warm-up it reaches only 47 watts from the AC mains, but even worse it does so with a 0.57 power factor.A safe guess for the power delivered to the tube would be no more 80% of the input power, or about 38 watts.If this level of performance is acceptable to you, you'll get more light from the 2-tube Commercial Electric T8 shop light from Home Depot (less than twenty five dollars with tubes).You can even improve this if you laminate its white reflector with aluminized mylar.
A good T5HO ballast will deliver close to 54 watts to a tube with a power factor of 0.97 or higher.I've ordered a 2-tube model to replace the meager performers.I will mount both fixtures and the LED strip on a single substrate that also accommodates the new ballast and the LED power supply.
